About the 490th Bombardment Group Memorial Association
The 490th Bombardment Group Memorial Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the brave air crews who served in the 490th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force during World War II.
The 490th Bomb Group flew over 180 combat missions from bases in England between September 1944 and April 1945, playing a crucial role in the Allied campaign to defeat Nazi Germany. Flying B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, the men of the 490th faced relentless anti-aircraft fire and fighter attack while carrying out daylight strategic bombing raids deep over enemy territory.
Our mission is to perpetuate the legacy and memory of the 490th Bombardment Group. We work tirelessly to research the group’s history, collect and preserve artifacts and records, provide assistance to veterans and their families, and educate current and future generations about the group’s service and sacrifices.
While our numbers have gradually diminished over the decades, we remain committed to upholding the bond of the 490th and rallying around our core values of honor, duty, patriotism and sacrifice.
We welcome any surviving 490th veterans, their family members, historians, or members of the public passionate about World War II history to join our ranks. You can get involved by attending our annual events, contributing your stories and photos, or making a donation to support our ongoing preservation and memorial efforts.
Together, we will ensure that the story and heroic deeds of the 490th Bombardment Group are never forgotten. We owe an eternal debt of gratitude to these brave airmen for their service and helping to achieve ultimate victory in the war against tyranny.
